The History of Lorem Ipsum: From Cicero to the Digital Age

Lorem ipsum has been in continuous use for over 500 years. Here's the full history — from a Roman philosopher's treatise to the default text of every design tool on the planet.

Few pieces of text have had a stranger journey through history than lorem ipsum. It began as a serious work of philosophy, survived the transition from manuscript to movable type, endured five centuries of typesetting, and eventually became the default placeholder for virtually every digital design tool in existence.

The source: Cicero, 45 BCE

The text originates in "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" — "On the Ends of Good and Evil" — written by Marcus Tullius Cicero in 45 BCE. Cicero was one of Rome's most prominent statesmen, lawyers, and writers. The work is a philosophical dialogue examining what constitutes the highest good and the greatest evil, drawing on Stoic, Epicurean, and Peripatetic thought.

The passage that would later become lorem ipsum appears in Book I, where Cicero writes (translated): "Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure."

In Latin, the opening of this section begins: "Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet..."

The words "lorem ipsum" themselves come from "dolorem ipsum" — "pain itself" — with the first syllable dropped.

The printers of the 15th and 16th centuries

The scrambled version of Cicero's text first appeared in type specimen books in the 1400s and 1500s. Printers producing these books — which showed typefaces available for purchase — needed blocks of text to demonstrate how the type looked in composition. Real text could introduce unwanted meaning or invite debate about its content. Scrambled Latin looked convincingly typeset without saying anything.

The lorem ipsum scramble seems to have been produced by taking sections of Cicero's original and rearranging words and phrases to disrupt meaning while preserving character distribution. The result is Latin that is close enough to readable that a Roman would recognize the words but grammatically incoherent as a whole.

The Letraset era

Lorem ipsum's modern dominance began with Letraset — the dry-transfer lettering sheets used by graphic designers before desktop publishing. Letraset sheets were literal sheets of type that designers transferred to layout paper by rubbing. In the 1960s and 1970s, Letraset produced lorem ipsum sheets that became the industry standard for indicating text in hand-crafted layouts.

By the time designers moved to computer-based tools in the 1980s, lorem ipsum was already the expected placeholder. Desktop publishing software shipped with lorem ipsum built in.

PageMaker and the digital default

Aldus PageMaker — the desktop publishing application that launched in 1985 and changed the graphic design industry — included lorem ipsum as its default placeholder text. PageMaker introduced desktop publishing to a mass audience; its inclusion of lorem ipsum introduced the placeholder to a generation of designers who had never heard of Letraset.

Every major design tool that followed — QuarkXPress, InDesign, Illustrator, later Sketch and Figma — carried lorem ipsum forward. It had become convention.

The internet era and lorem ipsum generators

As web design emerged in the 1990s, lorem ipsum moved into the browser. Early web designers used it to populate HTML mockups. By the 2000s, dedicated lorem ipsum generators appeared online, offering configurable amounts of text at the click of a button. Today, dozens of generators exist, many supporting languages beyond Latin to serve the needs of global product teams.

The text has also spawned parodies: "Hipster Ipsum" fills designs with artisanal coffee references; "Bacon Ipsum" replaces Latin with meat-related vocabulary; "Pirate Ipsum" renders everything in seafaring vernacular. These remain novelties — when it matters, designers still reach for the original.

Why it persists

Lorem ipsum persists because it is convention, and conventions in tooling are remarkably durable. Every designer recognizes what lorem ipsum means immediately. It is language without content — a signal that says "text goes here" in a way that any text purporting to be content cannot.

Cicero would likely be baffled to learn that a scrambled excerpt from his philosophical treatise is now embedded in every major design tool on the planet, used billions of times a year by people who have never heard his name. But in a way, it is a testament to the durability of good writing: even garbled beyond recognition, the rhythms of his prose still read naturally enough to stand in for real language across half a millennium.
